a journal of a researcher

It is a nightmare to write a research project proposal. Besides the part to talk about the research, you have a lot of overhead to fill the forms and get the signatures. This time, I wait to the last minute.

The Web Services is the topic of our proposal. I found there are a lot to do. From this proposal, I find myself in e-business domain.

  • Yeah. Research proposals are really a pain and far more time consuming than people might assume.

However, I think it is a good process if you don't overdo it. Even if it is very fictituous, the mere fact of trying to explain to someone why something you might do might be very valuable is helpful to you, sometimes.

I think the problems start when you write proposals about things you don't know well, don't plan to really do or haven't done, or when there are too many people involved and it becomes a giant mess...

I have mixed funding about funding for research. I think that the government gives too often very large amounts and not often enough small amounts. This makes it so that people come together only for the money, they create fake proposals, and then go their separate ways and rarely deliver what was meant to be delivered. At least, in Canada, that's often the case because nobody will ever check that you did deliver on what you promised (though the federal government does it more and more).

Still, it is a matter of value. I much prefer a couple of people coming together and doing some small but valuable work, than a giant project which often goes out of control, or risk being the battleground of a power struggle, or whatever else. I think the really important ideas often come from a couple of people working together rather than from large groups motivated by greed.

  • That is a good point that the funds should be given in small amount and to diversity requests. I found some people are attracting too much funding and controlling one domain.
